Jaipur: The University of Rajasthan (RU) on Wednesday celebrated its 68th Foundation Day in the Ghoomar Ground with the event witnessing the presence of Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar as chief guest, while Governor Margaret Alva, Education Minister Kali Charan Saraf, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Dev Swarup was also present during the function among others.

The celebration was mesmerized of cultural performances by students and a photo exhibition which was lauded by the eminent dignitaries. The photo exhibition showed Rajasthan University’s glorious past in 150 pictures.  However, Governor Margaret Alva during her speech expressed dissatisfaction towards the working of the university.

“The university in Rajasthan is moribund. There is no collective life on the campus – no talks, seminars, concerts. The most popular departments are commerce and the sciences, and the humanities are floundering. White ants and termites are eating away a huge collection of historical records in the university library at Jaipur, and there are no resources to save them,” she said
She went on saying that the faculties of the varsity are busy in their side business rather than taking up the
academic activities.

“Some of the active professors I dealt with have side businesses (translating history, working with tourist development…), and their university duties are not primary among their priorities. It is not clear what will happen in the next few years. I imagine that an even stronger stagnation may set in,” adding that bold measures are taken by the VC and it is good beginning.
